Excerpt from SOFA NEW YORK 2011 Wrap Release:
NEW YORK, April 25, 2011. The 14th annual Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair at the Park Avenue Armory enjoyed steady crowds and sales, from the well-attended vernissage on April 13 straight through its four-day run, which ended on Sunday, April 17. An estimated 2000 persons attended Opening Night throughout the course of the evening, and an after-preview benefit dinner in the Armory’s Tiffany Room for the Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) honoring Judy Cornfield was a sell-out. MAD also sponsored the new MAD Den Video Lounge designed by NY architect/designer David Ling, adding yet another media to the stimulating mix of art and design at the fair.
A healthy crowd of collectors, curators, architects, interior designers, art advisors and new enthusiasts took in SOFA NEW YORK, presented by 57 galleries from 12 countries, and produced by The Art Fair Company. President and founding director of SOFA fairs in New York, Chicago and Santa Fe, Mark Lyman said, “It was a good show. As in any art fair, there were extraordinary sales for some, more moderate ones for others, but most seemed pleased with the outcome. Weekend attendance was strong and dealers reported well-qualified collectors, designers and curators on the show floor, as well as younger buyers, many attending SOFA for the first time at the New Collectors/ Young Designers evening.”

Excerpt from SOFA NEW YORK 2011 Asian and British Dealers Highlights:
Mark Lyman, Founder/Director of SOFA and President, The Art Fair Company, says, "While the three-dimensional masterworks on offer by SOFA dealers often reference traditional decorative art, many brook no boundaries, mixing sophisticated content with new forms, materials and processes." Lyman continues, "It interests me that some of the more striking departures originate in countries with the longest and most-revered decorative arts roots, for example, Asia and the United Kingdom. We're very pleased that this year's fair offers an increased presence of dealers from these seminal regions."

Excerpt from Hightech Release:
From advanced 3-D prototyping to bullet-proof carbon fiber, one of the most interesting aspects of SOFA NEW YORK, the cutting-edge contemporary decorative design fair, is how many of the artists employ new concepts and technologies in their work. Below are several examples that illustrate how contemporary decorative design is going high-tech at this year's fair:
New Paltz, NY artist Sergey Jivetin, winner of the prestigious Herbert Hoffman Preis and Art Jewelry Forum Emerging Artist Award is a pioneer of new processes and materials: "I search for contemporary developments in high technology and mechanization that are not adverse to the format of jewelry. I am interested in opening new ways of obtaining levels of interaction between beauty, physicality, and knowledge."
Excerpt from Art and Design in the 21st Century:
New York - A growing hallmark of the artworks offered by 57 dealers from 12 countries at SOFA NEW YORK 2011 is their synthesis of art and design, the past and present, high concept and virtuosity of materials.
Design, technology and globalization bring people and environments of many cultures together. Personifying this trend are the 6 ft tall porcelain vessels by Sin-ying Ho, a Hong Kong-Chinese ceramist living in North America, which will greet SOFA NEW YORK visitors at the entrance to the fair. Represented by Lyons Wier Gallery, New York, Ho spent many months in the Chinese porcelain center of Jingdezhan learning how to create and decorate life-sized, single-fired vessels, which reference not only the age-old royal blue Qing Hua porcelain tradition but also contemporary culture. For example “In the Dream of Hope” features hundreds of painted flowers juxtaposed with digital transfer-printed images of stock market index charts, which Ho says was inspired by the onset of the global economic crisis.
