Coming of Age in the Digital Era:
ARCOS Dance Multi-Media Project Teams with Local Actors, Artists
January 2012
SANTA FE, NM.
ARCOS Dance presents its first annual Multi-Media Project, entitled '500 Words or Less,' at the MPD Performance Space at 1583 Pacheco Street in Santa Fe February 3-5 and 10-12, 2012, at 7:30pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00pm Sundays. The company will host an invitation-only VIP and press Opening Night Preview Thursday, February 2nd, also at 7:30pm. As part of its annual four-concert home season, ARCOS "focused this new work on the concept of integration and bridging mediums. We want to give dancers and other artists opportunities they can't get elsewhere, something unique and truly professional—a platform to help them excel," said ARCOS Associate Artistic Director Erica Gionfriddo. "The idea of technology and how it influences our lives is an underlying theme, which really opened the door for collaboration with a variety of artists." ARCOS Dance World Premiere performances were one hundred percent sold out in October 2011, and the company's presentation of new work is eagerly anticipated by media and public alike.
'500 Words or Less' will highlight use of space with photographs and video art leading into the studio, a museum-like display of older communication devices, and dancing already in progress when the audience arrives. The focus of the Project continually changes location in the performance space throughout the evening, adding to the layered effect of its acts. "It's fun! The format allows us vignettes with a wrapper to tie them all together," Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann said. "We can't wait to keep designing more sound medleys and brainstorming. I love this!" Evoking the 'disjointed coherence' of dream, memory, and consciousness, the atmosphere is further enhanced by writing on the floor, a stack of old televisions above, trees extending perpendicular to the wall, an umbrella chandelier, and a grand piano. "It's not purely narrative," Gionfriddo said of the evening. "It's an experience tied together by dancers, music, and characters; it requires mental participation from the viewers."

BIG BUZZ: THE WORD ON ARCOS DANCE WORLD PREMIERE
PERFORMED TO 100% FULL HOUSES AND RAVE REVIEWS
ARCOS Dance presented its World Premiere Repertoire Concerts at the MPD Performance Space at 1583 Pacheco Street in Santa Fe October 14-15 and 21-22. Enthusiastically received by the press and public alike, all four ARCOS Dance World Premiere performances were one hundred percent sold-out! The company also welcomed VIPs and press to a special invitation-only Opening Night Preview attended at capacity, and headlined an evening at Taos Center for the Arts October 27th.
"I'm still in a bit of shock from the overwhelmingly positive response ARCOS received our first time out. The dancers were extremely proud of themselves and the work, and that is the best compliment I can ask for. Having sold-out houses every single night was a fantastic surprise, and the success of the premiere really makes me feel like ARCOS is doing things right," said Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann.

ARCOS DANCE WORLD PREMIERE REPERTOIRE CONCERT
AND VIP OPENING NIGHT PREVIEW
ARCOS Dance presents its World Premiere Repertoire Concert Friday and Saturday, October 14-15 and 21-22, at the MPD Performance Space at 1583 Pacheco St. in Santa Fe. Featuring new works and existing choreography by Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann and Associate Artistic Director Erica Gionfriddo, the performance includes 19 ARCOS Dance members from the Northern New Mexico region and Colorado. The company also cordially welcomes VIPs and press to a special invitation-only Opening Night Preview
Thursday, October 13th, followed by a question-and-answer reception with choreographers and dancers for discussion of the works and their experiences as members of ARCOS.
New world premiere choreography by Uhlemann and Gionfriddo, 'The Raven' is danced to Edgar Allan Poe's classic poem read by Basil Rathbone. Performers move on, around, and over a solitary wingback chair center stage, and don various cuts of costuming and fantastical headdresses. "For us, this piece is about stepping in a new direction. Most choreography relies heavily on music for effect. Instead, with 'The Raven' we're focusing on subtlety of the spoken voice and its intonations to help create the mood," said Uhlemann.

ANNOUNCING ARCOS DANCE: A NEW CONTEMPORARY DANCE
PERFORMANCE COMPANY IN SANTA FE, AND FIRST CALL FOR AUDITIONS!
Announcing ARCOS Dance, a new contemporary dance company in Santa Fe offering world class choreography and performance opportunities to both preprofessional and professional performers. Created specifically for dancers in their teens and early twenties, performers are encouraged to continue training at their respective schools and join ARCOS to supplement technical training with live performance. The company's yearround home season includes five productions, each featuring a different repertoire. "The
line between dance students and professionals is already blurred. The ARCOS program is structured as a mix of teens with advanced training and young professional dancers working together, with monthly participation in performance rehearsals and opportunities in conjunction with continued technique training at their own schools," said Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann.
